Although rich Chinese have household wealth that is comparable to their American counterparts, Chinese incomes still lag significantly behind, according to the 2012 China Household Finance Survey by researchers from China's Southwestern University of Finance.
China's GDP is just half that of the U.S.'s, but its total net household wealth--which includes assets such as homes and deposits--was $69 trillion in 2010, a fifth higher than the same figure in the U.S., according to the survey. China's high levels of home ownership, coupled with a housing market boom, are the main reasons. The top 1% of Chinese families hold an average of $1.5 million in assets, while average Chinese household wealth is $368,000, versus $499,000 for an average American family. Meanwhile, an annual income of $91,639 puts you in the top 1% in China, while you need to make more than $506,000 to be in the top 1% in the U.S. This shows most of the Chinese wealth has come from increasing home values. What percent are you in China? Use the calculator above to see where you stand based on income and wealth in China. You can also see what percent you are in the U.S. at Real Time Economics.
