Alibaba has underlined its determination to keep management control of the internet group after it floats, drawing a line in the sand in the company’s stand-off with Hong Kong’s listing authorities.

Jack Ma, founder and chairman, told employees that the group would only go public on an exchange that supported its ability to control its long-term future through a partnership.

Alibaba has been planning for months to bring its highly anticipated $60bn-plus initial public offering to Hong Kong, but its desire to retain control over the make-up of its board pits it against local regulatory principles on treating all investors fairly and equally.

“We are not concerned about where to go public,” Mr Ma wrote in a letter yesterday to staff. “[B]ut we do care that wherever we end up going public must support this type of open, innovative, responsible culture that values long-term development.” The company will turn to New York to list if it does not get its way in Hong Kong, say people familiar with the company.

“This type” of culture refers to the group’s partnership system, which Mr Ma formally unveiled in his letter. The system, piloted in 2010, is composed of a group of shareholding senior executives who run different businesses.

Mr Ma, Joe Tsai, one of the co-founders and a vice-chairman, and Jonathan Lu, current chief executive, are first among equals in the leadership group, which has been built up through a three-year selection process.

“这种”文化指的是阿里巴巴的合伙人架构。马云在致员工的信中正式披露了这种架构。这项试行于2010年的制度由几个持股的资深高管组成,他们负责不同的业务。

阿里巴巴联合创始人之一、副董事长蔡崇信(Joe Tsai)以及现任首席执行官陆兆禧(Jonathan Lu)是首批加入领导集体的两人。该领导集团是通过长达3年的遴选过程构建的。
