Eighteen years after her death, Taiwanese pop diva Teresa Teng, one of Asia's most-loved performers, made a surprise return to the stage in Taipei over the weekend with the help of California-based multimedia company Digital Domain 3.0 Inc.

The life-size digital image of Ms. Teng, dressed in a signature slim-fitting cheongsam, thrilled the audience of 15,000 on Friday night, when she ascended from beneath the stage to sing three duets with Mandopop star Jay Chou at his concert in Taipei.

Mr. Chou and the virtual Ms. Teng performed one of her biggest hits, 'What You Have to Say,' in addition to two of Mr. Chou's songs, 'Red Tavern' and 'Thousand Miles Away.'

The special performances continued at the Taipei Arena on Saturday and Sunday.

Digital Domain is the same company that created the image of rapper Tupac, who died in 1996, for last year's Coachella Valley Music and Arts Annual Festival.

'Our goal was to honor Teresa Teng - as a singer and as a person,' Steve Preeg, the visual-effects supervisor and animation director at Digital Domain, said in a statement. 'If her family and friends feel that her personality came through in the performance, then we did our jobs.'

Since Ms. Teng's death in 1995 in Thailand at the age of 42, her brother - Frank Teng, the chairman of the Teresa Teng Foundation - has been active in preserving the legacy of his sister, whose popularity spanned across the Chinese-speaking world. Although Ms. Teng's music was banned in China - she was known for her staunch anticommunism views - she is beloved in the country.

Mr. Teng worked with Digital Domain to get his sister's expressions and mannerisms down just right for the concert. 'It gives her long-time fans a chance to see her perform again, and it brings Teresa's music to a whole new generation, through Jay Chou's show and songs,' he said in the statement.

Digital Domain has created visual images for some of Hollywood's biggest blockbusters, including 'Titanic,' 'Iron Man 3' and the 'Transformers' trilogy.
