China’s Haitong Securities
is hunting for more foreign acquisitions, including a European asset manager and US investment firm, to build on its take-over of Portugal’s Banco Espírito Santo de Investimento, which was completed yesterday. Hiroki Miyazato, deputy chief executive of Haitong, told the Financial Times that the recent sell-off in Chinese equity markets had only made him more convinced about the need to diversify into western markets. “I don’t regard this short-term stock market trend as having an impact on the long-term trend for internationalisation of Chinese companies,” he said. “But they will be more cautious for sure and they will need to adjust their funding and hedging strategies to handle the risks, such as foreign exchange and market volatility, and Haitong will now be there to help them.” Nine months after Haitong agreed to pay ¢379m to buy BESI, the bank created out of the wreckage of Portugal’s failed Banco Espírito Santo, from Novo Banco it has received approval from 11 national regulators for the deal. BESI, which is to be renamed Haitong Bank, has started an aggressive hiring spree, adding more than 20 people in London in recent weeks. Haitong plans to more than double staff numbers over three years at its new Europe-based operation from the roughly 800 it has acquired. Haitong Bank will be based in Lisbon, where it employs about 200 people, but aims to expand rapidly in the UK, where it has about 100 staff. It also operates in Brazil, Spain, Poland, India and the US. Mr Miyazato said: “We want to increase our presence in the UK, one of the most important markets in the world.” He said that the bank was looking to expand its activities in cash equities, research, fixed income, asset management, and mergers and acquisitions. “Asset management is an area that Haitong would consider to expand via acquisition,” he said, and added that it aimed to become a leading provider of offshore renminbi services in London.
