Chinese shares punched more than 4 per cent higher on Monday, chalking up their biggest gains since the turning point of the recent bear-market.
At the close, the Shanghai Composite was up 4.9 per cent to 3,928.42. That is the index's biggest gain since July 9, which is the day after the Chinese sharemarket closed at its bear market-low, writes Peter Wells. This makes it the Shanghai benchmark's third-biggest one-day gain this year, and also the third-biggest of the past five years. In the final half-hour of trade, the index was up as much as 5.3 per cent. The Shenzhen Composite closed 4.5 per cent higher to 2,274.84 for its best day since August 4 and its fifth-best gain this year. The index was up as much as 5 per cent within the final 30 minutes of the session. The chatter doing the rounds today is that Beijing plans to consolidate numerous state-owned enterprises, which are struggling under large debt burdens, with capital injections. The spotlight was on the shipping industry, with reports the government was considering a merger of China Shipping Group and Cosco group. Shares in the companies listed on the Shanghai and Hong Kong exchanges were suspended on Monday pending announcements, prompting speculation the companies would be merged. That spurred strong gains in other shipping companies. Shares in China CSSC Holdings, a shipbuilder, and China Shipbuilding Industry Company surged by the daily trading limit in Shanghai of 10 per cent, while China International Marine Containers rose as much as 7.7 per cent and China Shipping Haisheng was up as much as 9.7 per cent. Shares in Hong Kong-listed China Cosco Holdings rose 24.8 per cent last week, including a 13.6 per cent rise on Friday. In a move that could be a precursor for consolidation among SOEs in other industries, Beijing this year combined the country's two largest railway equipment manufacturers - China CNR and CSR Corp - into one single entity, known as China Railway Construction Group, which is listed on both the Shanghai and Hong Kong exchanges. The Hang Seng was down 0.1 per cent in afternoon trade. A bout of weak economic data released over the weekend had analysts predicting this morning that more monetary and fiscal stimulus from China's policymakers would be forthcoming.
