Alibaba
has announced it will invest $1bn in cloud computing over the next three years as it seeks to emulate the exponential growth of rival Amazon in the sector. The Chinese ecommerce group is the top cloud computing provider in its home market, with its Aliyun unit accounting for about 30 per cent market share. The company has begun pushing its cloud services abroad, and earlier this year built its first data centre outside greater China in Silicon Valley, mainly to support Alibaba clients working in the area. Simon Hu, president of Aliyun, said that cloud computing would “become fundamental infrastructure for new economic development”. The Hangzhou-based company has been eager to copy Amazon’s success in cloud computing. The US electronic retailer announced that revenue from Amazon Web Services increased 81 per cent year on year to $1.8bn in the quarter ending June 30, while profits from the cloud division soared more than fivefold.
