【英语生活】日本人为何造不出iPhone？

As the lines in Ginza and Harajuku indicate, Apple products are a hit here.

But there are some mixed feelings over the fact that such a cutting-edge, in-demand device isn't made in Japan, a country known for its tech savvy.

Keiichi Sugiyama waited at the front of the 80-person line outside electronics retailer Bic Camera Yurakucho, Thursday morning. He already owns an iPhone 3G but wanted the newer model because it has more memory, an enhanced operating system and the new 'multitask' function.

His Japanese cellphone, an NEC N-09A, is strictly business, Mr. Sugiyama, a 36-year-old president of a system-engineering company, said.

'It's not fun using it,' despite its high screen resolution and camera, he said. Of his phones, it's 'the one that annoys me,' he added, and he likes his iPhone because of its 'design and playful style.'

'No one in Japan pursues the overall originality and uniqueness that combine function and design, satisfy people's wants and surprise them,' said Motoo Nakanishi, a consultant and professor at Waseda University Research Institute of Strategic Design.

In Japan, he said, designers tend to focus on the specifications in front of them, not on creating something new.

Mr. Sugiyama, after opening his new iPhone 4, came to a similar conclusion.

'I'm not the first person to say this,' he said, 'but this is what Sony should do…Why couldn't Japan make this?'

Bloomberg News一名日本消费者上周四在东京展示iPhone 4周四早上80人排在电子产品零售店Bic Camera Yurakucho门口，Keiichi Sugiyama排在前头，他已经拥有iPhone 3G，但还想要更新一款，因为新出的iPhone 4有更多内存，操作系统已改进，并且有新的“多任务”功能。

今年36岁的Sugiyama先生是一家系统工程公司总裁，他的日本手机NEC N-09A完全用于业务。

尽管这款日本手机屏幕分辨率高并且带有照相机，但他说，用它根本没意思，他补充说，在他所有手机里，这部手机令自己很不喜欢。他喜欢他的iPhone，是因为它的设计和好玩款式。

早稻田大学战略设计研究院顾问兼教授Motoo Nakanishi说，在日本没人追求综合了功能和设计的整体独创性和唯一性，iPhone满足了人们的需求，并让他们惊喜不已。

他说，日本设计师关注他们面前的规格，而不是创新。

Sugiyama先生打开新的iPhone 4后也得出了相似的结论。

他说，我不是这么说的第一个人，但这正是索尼（Sony）应该做的……为什么日本不能生产出来呢？
