Giorgio Armani Reports Sales, Profits Fell Last Year
Italian fashion house Giorgio Armani SpA said Monday that its sales and profits dropped last year due to a consumer-spending slump brought on by the economic crisis. The company, owned entirely by the 76-year-old designer, said sales fell 6% to 1.52 billion euros from 1.62 billion euros a year earlier. Operating profit tumbled 28% to 218 million euros from 303 million euros. The company didn't disclose net profit. In a statement, Armani said the consumer-spending slump particularly affected its business in North America and Japan, two of the biggest luxury-goods markets. However, sales in China, a key emerging market, rose 32%. The results were the first since owner Armani shook up his management ranks last fall. Armani, who holds both creative and business roles at his company, is delegating more responsibility after suffering from a serious illness last year. The new management, headed by Chief Executive Livio Proli, has been given the task of responding 'more quickly and efficiently to the market's changing demands,' the company said.
