Life in the People's Liberation Army just got lonelier for single soldiers, after a series of classified leaks via the Internet prompted a ban on online dating, the state-run China Daily reported.

The new orders don't stop at dating, however, and include banning military personnel from popular social-networking sites such as Kaixin001.

'Soldiers should not take part in any Internet interaction, even if they try to cover up their military identities, because they cannot ensure they will not be revealing any information relating to their job, including something they may consider irrelevant,' said Mu Xiankui, senior colonel and researcher from the China Academy of Military Science, according to the report.

The new measures may sound draconian for one of the world's most rapidly modernizing militaries, but China's armed forces remain among the world's most secretive, and a puzzle for foreign observers.

'The military is a reflection of society and how it responds will be a result of that. So in more closed societies, it's easier for the military to say, 'Don't do anything. Don't talk online. That's that,'' Ho Shu Huang, an associate research fellow at the Institute of Defence and Strategic Studies at Singapore's Nanyang Technological University, told the Associated Press.

The United States allows its soldiers, including those in combat zones, access to social media. It uses sites like Twitter and Facebook for promotional and recruitment purposes, regularly posting photos of smiling soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan.

It's unclear how China's army will enforce the regulations amid a vast Internet population that's using the web more than many of its peers. In a June report, the government praised social-networking sites and other online technologies as providing 'greater convenience for Chinese citizens to communicate online.'

So what's a single soldier to do? Luckily, the government provides an alternative every few months (though it may seem archaic to China's wired youth): military-run dating events to introduce soldiers to 'reliable civilians,' according to China Daily.

Then again, as one PLA officer, whom the newspaper did not identify, realizes, the impacts of the military's secrecy reach far beyond socializing. 'We are not familiar with current affairs or popular social topics, which makes it hard for many demobilized soldiers to blend into society,' he said.
