What does Google's annual 'Zeitgeist' summary of 2010 web searches reveal about the interests of people living in the world's second-largest economy? Not what you might think.

In a year that produced more than its fair share of sensitive topics, some might expect users of Google--China's 'uncensored' search engine--to display certain political leanings. Instead, the company's latest annual search data (in Chinese) shows users more concerned with entertainment and shopping.

As in previous years, 'Baidu,' or the name of Google's chief rival in China, the most popular search website in China, is at the top of the list of most searched terms, followed by 'QQ,' China's most popular instant-messaging service, operated by Tencent. After that comes Alibaba Group's online shopping website Taobao, with '163,' a popular web portal run by Netease, also making the top ten. Others include the online game websites, online video websites and social networking website Kaixin001.

There was also little controversy to be found on the top ten most searched film and television titles.

Box office hit 'Avatar' was the most searched movie. Feng Xiaogang's tear-jerking earthquake blockbuster ' Aftershock,' martial arts biopic 'Ip Man 2,' and 'Inception' also made the list. Although many Chinese made a connectionbetween the predicament of the Na'vi in 'Avatar' and the thousands of regular Chinese forcefully evicted from their homes by real estate developers, the government seem largely unfazed by enthusiasm for the film. Ditto 'Aftershock' and the rest.

One exception was 'Lust Caution,' the 2007 Ang Lee film that about a young female spy who seduces a Kuomintang official during China's civil war, which ended up being the second-most searched movie this year. The film, partially censored in China, was famous for its steamy sex scenes, which helped earn lead actress Tang Wei a temporary ban from appearing in Chinese films, lifted this year.

Another exception was ' Woju,' a hit TV series about the difficulties young couples faces in buying their own home in a big city like Shanghai and this year's sixth-most searched television show. In the series, which was eventually banned, one character becomes the well paid mistress of a corrupt government official to help her sister afford the down payment on a new apartment.

Movies, along with online games and sports, dominated Google's list of fastest-rising search terms in China. Meanwhile, the list of most searched-for people included May Day, a Taiwanese pop group; Han Han, an outspoken Chinese novelist and blogger; Lady Gaga; and comedian Xiao Shenyang.

Demonstrating that sex is universally a hot topic in any nation, Zhang Xiaoyu, a 25-year-old girl who became famous in China for posting nude photos of herself online, also made the list. (Pornography is bannedin China.)

To be sure, Google and other popular websites, including domestic ones, have made China's censorship efforts more difficultby speeding up the spread of information. This year's Zeitgeist results suggest that Chinese Internet users, like their counterparts in the U.S., simply spend most of their time consuming information that's entertaining.

Research firm Analysys International said Google had 21.6% of China's search market revenue as of the third quarter, while Baidu had 73%. Baidu publishes popular search terms over a period seven days on its website, but the company has not released its most popular search terms for the year.

AP Photo/20th Century Fox
