The priorities for the Internet begin and end with security, a top government adviser said Thursday.
Gao Xinmin, standing vice chairman at Internet Society of China, spoke at Shanghai's China Digital Media Summit, offering a few ideas for the future of the fast-expanding Chinese web. 'The Internet is a very important media. But Internet is more than media,' said Gao. 'It's a new infrastructure, it's a new social infrastructure.' The society says on its website that it aims to 'promote healthy development of Internet in China and make it an active part of World Internet Community.' The Internet's primary regulator is the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. As Chinese Internet companies move to close the gap with their international counterparts, a number of factors are important, said Gao. First, he said, without elaborating, 'The Internet must be safe and credible.' It must be 'omnipresent' and 'always on,' with information available on a real-time basis, Gao said. The State Council has announced a 12-city pilot project meant to combine TV, cable and Internet service, he added. In China, Gao said companies need to work on 'crossover opportunities,' and cited Apple Inc. (AAPL) as a prime example of a U.S. company that competes in various technology spaces. 'They are a manufacturer, but their success should be based on the Internet platform success,' Gao said. (He didn't specifically cite Apple's iTunes--perhaps a good thing, because while Apple can open stores in China, it so far isn't permitted to run its popular media sales platform here.) Likewise, Google Inc. (GOOG) is moving in the direction of wireless services, said Gao, adding that such convergence hasn't been successfully demonstrated in China. He did applaud efforts by some Chinese companies to build platforms, or 'ecosystems,' in the 'cloud,' like Alibaba and Tencent. But he expressed concern about estimates that China would see about 800 million malignant software and emails this year. 'Everything I talked about must be backed by security...we see more and more issues and challenges,' he said.
