As results from the U.S. midterm elections were rolling in through the Asian session, stock markets in the region rose in early Wednesday trading.

Investors were closely watching the impact of election results on markets world-wide.

But many investors stayed on the sidelines, waiting for the outcome of the U.S. Federal Reserve meeting slated for later in the day.

'It all comes down to the FOMC and the midterm elections,' said George Kanaan, head of sales at UBS in Sydney, referring to the Federal Open Market Committee meeting.

'Large-scale stimulus and increased support for the Republicans would be positive for markets,' he added.

South Korea's Kospi Composite was up 1.3%, Australia's S&P/ASX 200 added 0.3% and New Zealand's NZX-50 gained 0.1%. Markets in Japan were closed for a national holiday. Dow Jones Industrial Average futures were up 11 points in screen trade.

Investors continued the countdown to the end of the Fed's policy meeting later in the global day, amid uncertainty over the size and scope of a widely predicted second round of quantitative easing from the U.S central bank.

In Seoul, auto makers were leading sharp gains for the market, extending their recent gains following strong results and expectations of further earnings growth.

Hyundai Motor was up 1.3%, Hyundai Mobis advanced 1.0% and Kia Motor rose 1.4%. Tech plays were following the general uptick in the market, with Samsung Electronics up 0.7% and LG Display up 0.9%.

Insurers were also generally higher on bargain-hunting, with Hyundai Marine up 4.3% and Meritz Fire 5.4% higher.

In Sydney, the market was supported by gains in materials plays although selling in the financial sector capped its rise. Traders said the financial sector was being dragged down as investors raised cash to invest in Westfield's capital raising.

Westfield remained on a trading halt after it announced plans Wednesday to spin 54 Australian and New Zealand shopping centres into a new company, which would raise up to 3.5 billion Australian dollars (US$3.49 billion) through a share issue.

The raising will comprise an up to A$2 billion public offer and up to A$1.5 billion offer to eligible Westfield securityholders.

ANZ Bank was off 0.4% and Commonwealth Bank of Australia lost 1.0%. Westpac Bank rose 0.8% after its fiscal year results showed some stabilization in earnings.

The property sector was mostly lower, with Lend Lease off 1.5% and Stockland down 1.4%.

Gainers were led by Newcrest Mining, up 1.5%, and BHP Billiton, up 0.6%.

In Wellington, shares were treading water ahead of key global events, including the Fed meeting as well as Bank of Japan and Bank of England policy meetings and U.S. jobs data later in the week.

Sky City was up 0.6% as it extended gains following an upbeat earnings presentation at last week's annual meeting.

Other blue-chip stocks were modestly lower, with Auckland Airport off 0.5% and Fletcher Building off 0.2%.
