Hong Kong's mobile-phone mall in Mongkok is legend among the region's gadget aficionados. The shops in the mall stock the latest gear, from the newest Apple Inc. products to their Chinese-made knockoffs.
Tech consumers all over Asia descend on the mobile phone mall to find the items they can't find in Tokyo, Singapore or Bangkok--at least not at the prices they can get in Hong Kong. The shopkeepers in Mongkok stay on the cutting edge of the product release cycle by arranging purchase and transport of the items months ahead of time, as they did for the highly anticipated release of the iPad in the spring. The merchants had less lead time for the iPhone 4, which launched in several countries just a few weeks after it was announced, but they have been no less efficient in managing its import and sale in Hong Kong.
