A pair of technology conferences kick off on opposite sides of the Pacific this week as tech companies grapple with issues ranging from Internet privacy and regulatory concerns to the effects of a sputtering global economy that could slow down electronics spending.

From Tuesday through Saturday, the annual Computex electronics trade show takes place in Taipei, Taiwan, while the All Things D conference brings together industry heavyweights including Steve Jobs and Steve Ballmer on Tuesday through Thursday in Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif. All Things D is owned by The Wall Street Journal.

Computex draws executives from chip makers including Intel Corp. and ARM Holdings PLC to software giants such as Google Inc. and Microsoft Corp. Companies will present the latest in cloud computing and mobile gadgets, including tablet PCs and electronic book readers.

Asia's largest computer makers and contract-manufacturing houses use the show to present new designs and suggest prototypes of emerging technologies. This year's show will include a number of tablet-PC designs. It comes as many technology companies have posted strong earnings in the quarter ended March 31, bringing optimism for a spending rebound.

In California, All Things D offers a look into the thinking and plans of tech's biggest names. Apple CEO Jobs will kick off the three-day event and be followed by discussions with Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg and AOL's Tim Armstrong.

Expect Mr. Jobs to discuss Apple's new iPad tablet-PC, which sold a million units in its first month, and has triggered a rush by rivals to produce competitors. Mr. Jobs is likely to face questions about the company's ongoing dispute with Adobe Systems Inc., a new iPhone that's expected next week, and new wireless carriers for the smartphone.
