Toyota Motor Corp. suspended production at a car plant in southern China Tuesday due to a strike at a supplier, just a day after the Japanese company restarted a separate Chinese plant that had been idled by labor action.
A strike at the supplier plant, Denso (Guangzhou Nansha) Co., caused a shortage of fuel injectors and other components, which forced Toyota's plant near Guangzhou to shut its two assembly lines, said Hitoshi Yokoyama, a Beijing-based Toyota spokesman. The strike at the Denso factory, wholly owned by Japan's Denso Corp., which is in turn 25%-owned by Toyota, is part of a wave of labor unrest that has hit China in recent months. On Friday, a strike at a parts supplier in the industrial port city of Tianjin forced Toyota to suspend operations at its car-production plant there, although that strike was resolved and Toyota resumed production Monday in Tianjin. A Denso executive in Beijing said the factory raised wages in April, but striking workers are demanding a bigger increase. In southern China, Denso (Guangzhou Nansha) also supplies parts to Honda Motor Co. and other auto makers. Honda spokesman Takayuki Fujii said Honda plants in China operated normally Tuesday despite the strike. He said there is a possibility that the strike 'if it drags on a few days' could affect production at Honda's four plants in China. Yoko Suga, a Denso spokeswoman in Japan, said production at its plant near Guangzhou has been idle since Monday morning, when workers walked off the job. It wasn't immediately clear how extensive the walkout was. Ms. Suga said the company didn't know when the factory with 1,100 workers might be able to resume work. Toyota has assembly operations in four Chinese cities. Its Guangzhou plant can produce about 350,000 vehicles a year and makes the company's Camry sedans, among other models.
