Japan can tolerate Paris Hilton's long rap sheet of bad decisions, say, a widely-circulated underground sex tape and that nasty drunk driving incident to name just a few of the lewd and crude. But the country puts its foot down when it comes to drugs. Ms. Hilton headed back to the U.S. Wednesday afternoon after Japanese immigration authorities stopped her at Narita International Airport over the celebutante's guilty plea to a misdemeanor drug charge one day before her arrival in Tokyo. Major buzz kill.
Kazuo Kashihara, a Narita spokesman, would not comment on the reason for the questioning but told JRT that visitors with drug-related criminal records aren't generally allowed entry into the country. Ms. Hilton, who arrived Tuesday, was allowed to shack up in an airport hotel last night while immigration officials continued to investigate the case to determine whether she would be admitted into Japan, scheduled as the first stop on her Asia tour promoting her perfume line and fashion collection. Ms. Hilton was not available for comment, but wrote a chipper farewell on her Twitter account just before taking to the skies: 'About to take off. Going home now. So disappointed to miss my fans in Asia. I promise to come back soon. I love you all! Love Paris xoxo' The lightning blonde socialite's current conundrum stems from a bad trip to Las Vegas last month where she was arrested when a smidgen of cocaine was found in her purse. Her guilty plea to drug possession and obstructing an officer on Monday apparently made her a marked woman in the eyes of Japanese immigration. Mr. Kashihara said entry decisions in such cases are based on factors like whether the traveler carries a valid passport and visa and the purpose and length of stay in Japan. He did not elaborate on why the investigation went into a second day. It's a dark turn in Ms. Hilton's relationship with Japan, which opened its arms and wallets to the hotel heiress's fashion collection before she launched to fame in the U.S. with the richly quaint reality series 'The Simple Life,' with Nicole Richie in 2003. She posted a photo of herself posing with her 'BFF/Sis' Nicky Hilton on her Twitter account upon landing in Tokyo - and likely before her unfortunate run in with Japanese immigration. If only she had heeded the advice 'barbarita1974' beforehand, a Twitter user who posted the following comment below the photo Wednesday afternoon: 'Stay away from drugs Japan is much strict that US when it comes to drugs and you are already in deep trouble.' The bright side of this near-door-in-the-face incident is that it puts Ms. Hilton in a position to join a hassled-by-Japan-immigration club brimming with celebrity A-listers with a drug troubled past. Rockers like Mick Jagger and Keith Richards reportedly had trouble obtaining a visa to tour in Japan in the 1980s. Mr. Richards pled guilty to heroin possession in Canada in 1978. Former Beatles crooner Paul McCartney was arrested at Narita and later jailed for marijuana possession in 1980. Robert Downey Jr.'s drug-stained past from a decade ago stalled his entry when he came to Japan to promote his action flick 'Iron Man' in 2009.
