【英语国际】国民党荣誉主席吴伯雄抵京将与胡锦涛会谈

The Taiwan ruling party's honorary chairman, Wu Poh-hsiung, was to travel to Beijing late Sunday to meet with Chinese President Hu Jintao to discuss the 'new situation' formed after the two sides signed a trade agreement, said the Kuomintang, also known as the Nationalist Party.

Kuomintang spokesman Su Jun-Pin confirmed Saturday that the two would meet. Taiwan's president, Ma Ying-jeou, said Sunday that the talks were scheduled for Monday, Associated Press reported.

Mr. Ma said he had asked Mr. Wu to tell the Chinese president that China and Taiwan should work together to 'build mutual trust, set aside our differences and look for common grounds.'

The meeting comes after China and Taiwan on June 29 signed their first trade pact, a wide-ranging agreement that will reduce tariffs on hundreds of petrochemical, textile and other items, and open such services as banking to cross-strait investment, binding the two economies even closer.

The agreement must be approved by Taiwan's legislature, which has convened a special summer session to review it.

The agreement has created controversy in Taiwan, where many people worry the trade pact with China will bring a flood of cheap Chinese imports that could pressure domestic companies and hurt employment.

Mr. Wu over the weekend led a delegation to the sixth Cross-Strait Economic, Trade and Cultural Forum held in Guangzhou.

He said in a statement late Friday, after meeting with senior Chinese communist official and Politburo member Jia Qinglin, that the trade pact will likely be ratified in August.

The Kuomintang and its allies have an absolute majority in Taiwan's legislature.

此前中国大陆和台湾于6月29日签署了双方第一份贸易协议，该协议涉及范围广泛，它将降低数百种石化产品、纺织和其他产品的关税，开放银行等服务以进行海峡两岸的投资，从而使两岸经济更加紧密。

这一协议必须得到台湾立法委的批准，立法委已召开一个夏季特别会议来审查该协议。

这一协议在台湾引起争议，许多人担心与中国大陆签订的贸易协议将使中国大量廉价商品输出到台湾，而这将打压台湾岛内企业，并损及就业情况。

吴伯雄周末率领代表团参加在广州举行的第六届两岸经贸文化论坛。

在会见中国共产党高级官员和中共中央政治局常委贾庆林后，吴伯雄周五稍晚在声明中说，这一贸易协议可能将在8月份批准通过。

国民党及其同盟在台湾立法委中占有绝大多数席位。
