President Barack Obama has dismissed Stanley McChrystal as the commander of US and Nato forces in Afghanistan, in a move intended to reassert civilian authority over the US military but which also raises new doubts about the war against the Taliban.

Gen David Petraeus, the architect of the surge in Iraq and Gen McChrystal's current boss at US central command, will replace him as the commander in Afghanistan.

Mr Obama made his decision after Gen McChrystal and his aides made a series of insulting remarks about senior administration personnel in an interview given to Rolling Stone

“I don't make this decision based on any difference in policy with General McChrystal, as we are in full agreement about our strategy,” said Mr Obama. “Nor do I make this decision out of any sense of personal insult.”

But he added that Gen McChrystal's conduct “undermines the civilian control of the military that is at the core of our democratic system and it erodes the trust that's necessary for our team to work together to achieve our objectives in Afghanistan”

Indeed Mr Obama argued that US success against the Taliban depended on removing Gen McChrystal from his post. “I don't think that we can sustain that unity of effort and achieve our objectives in Afghanistan without making this change,” he said.

He called for the US Senate to confirm Gen Petraeus as Afghanistan commander as swiftly as possible. “This is a change in personnel but it is not a change in policy,” Mr Obama said.

It was only the latest in a series of problems between the Afghan commander and the White House, which also included tension between Gen McChrystal and Vice President Joe Biden.

Top US officials said until the last moments that they were uncertain what decision Mr Obama reached, given the importance of the US's effort in Afghanistan, which has been increasingly afflicted by delays.

But in a sign of Mr Obama's disfavour, Gen McChrystal left the White House immediately after a one on one meeting with the US President rather than attending an Afghanistan strategy session in the Situation room.
