Just a day after Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao concluded a state visit to Japan, Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama resigned over a U.S. military base row http://professional.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748704875604575281292285208862.html?mod=wsjproe_hps_TopLeftWhatsNews , a development that likely overshadows the China-Japan goodwill built up by Wen's trip.

Wen's visit to Tokyo included baseball, taichi and running in the park http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/cndy/2010-06/01/content_9914237.htm, showing off a softer side to the Chinese premier, possibly taking a page from the kind of side trips U.S. officials are known for during their formal jaunts abroad. Wen's visit resulted in China and Japan agreeing to start formal talks on the joint development of disputed gas fields in the East China Sea and agreeing to set up a hotline between the two countries to avert any future tensions.

On characterizing his trip, Wen said this one was 'a trip of confidence and hope' as compared to the one he made in April 2007, which Wen dubbed 'an ice-melting trip' -- it was the first by a Chinese premier to Tokyo in seven years. (Then-Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe resigned five months after he met Wen.)
